Our Story
The farm on which the Rocking W stands was homesteaded in 1918 and since then it has passed hands through the generations from Peter B. Wiebe, Peter P. Wiebe to Frank Wiebe and finally to Frank's son Rick and his family. Frank and Rick ran a PMU operation for over 60 years collectively and bought, sold, raised and trained horses. The ranch was one of the first PMU's in southern Manitoba and the first to use registered stock, marketing quality AQHA, APHA and Appaloosa colts. Rick raised his daughters, Tanya and Dusty, on the farm and later welcomed sons-in-law, Bryan and Bert.
For over 30 years, beginning in 1985, the Rocking W had been one of Western Canada's premiere horse sale companies; the early years as a place to market their quality foals to selling quality consignments from reputable breeders, trainers and owners, up for public auction. After 31 years, the horse sales came to an end and in September 2020 after Rick passed away, the final Rocking W horses were dispersed by online auction.
In addition, many lessons, clinics, team ropings, trail rides, wagon and sleigh rides and barrel racings were held here, as well as visits over coffee, barn dances, church hayrides, family gatherings and more, making numerous acquaintances, friends and wonderful memories.
Barb Wiebe, Rick's wife continues to run the ranch, providing horse boarding. Additionally, Jack Dyck is available for lessons and roping nights as he is available.
In 2009, Dusty started up a small, grassroots barrel racing event - The Rocking W Barrel Series. The Series spanned a 10 year career and was one of the most popular barrel racing series' in the province. The pandemic stopped the momentum the Series was gaining and while other Series' started up during the pandemic, Rocking W decided to forego the Series to make way for other's events to flourish. Instead, Dusty moved her focus on the Rick Wiebe Memorial Charity Race in 2022, which made a last minute move to the Dufferin Agricultural Society Grounds in Carman. In consideration of the event's growth and the addition of another big Open 4D and a Slot Race for 2023, the Rocking W Barrel Racing weekend officially relocated to Carman.
2024 has seen the Rick Wiebe Memorial expand to include various additions to offer to the community - a vendor show, silent auction, food trucks, and a 4H pancake breakfast and touch-a-horse experience.
Rocking W Barrel Racing Productions teams up with GoldenValley Farms for a fun and exciting 'Beanfield Barrel Race' each fall and has also embarked on an adventure with Crossfire Bullriding to collaborate on a bullriding and barrel racing 'Fast Paced Series', expanding our barrel racing event productions.
With Rick no longer with us and while Barb is there offering boarding at the home ranch, the natural progression and growth of the Rocking W Barrel Racing events has seen things change for us. As we've outgrown the space at the ranch and moved on to a public fairgrounds, things look a little different, but in a good way.
Through it all, we will continue to carry on Dad's legacy and the Rocking W brand.
